How Corridos Tumbados Reached the Global Charts

Peso Pluma's Génesis (2023) and his collaborations with Fuerza Regida and Natanael Cano moved corridos tumbados — a Sinaloa-rooted hybrid — from regional Mexican airplay to the Billboard Hot 100. A walk-through of the chart mechanics and the AMPROFON certifications behind the breakout.

The Sound and Its Origins

Corridos tumbados — sometimes called música mexicana — layers trap production, 808 bass and hi-hat patterns over the narrative corrido tradition rooted in northern Mexico's norteño lineage: accordion, bajo sexto guitar, stories of border life told in plain language. The hybrid took shape around 2019, associated above all with Sinaloa, and Natanael Cano is widely credited as its first commercial architect. What changed between 2019 and 2023 was not the sound so much as the infrastructure behind it — and the chart positions that infrastructure produced.

Corridos tumbados entered Mexican regional radio as a niche proposition. AMPROFON, Mexico's music industry certification body, tracks streaming and sales for the domestic market, and its early certifications for the genre sat modestly: gold and platinum thresholds that reflected enthusiastic but geographically concentrated consumption. The leap to the Billboard Hot 100 — a chart that, per Billboard's own methodology, blends streaming, radio airplay and sales data — required either a viral streaming event or a collaboration that bridged audience pools. Peso Pluma provided both.

What Génesis Did, Chart by Chart

Peso Pluma's album Génesis, released in June 2023 through his own label, Double P Records, did not merely perform well in Mexico. It entered the Billboard 200 at number three in its debut week, making it one of the highest-charting Spanish-language albums by a Mexican regional artist in the chart's history to that point. The Hot 100 impact came track by track: "Ella Baila Sola," his collaboration with Eslabon Armado, reached number four on the Hot 100 in June 2023, the highest position ever recorded by a regional Mexican song on that chart at the time, according to Billboard.

The chart mechanics reward cross-format consumption. "Ella Baila Sola" accumulated streams on Spotify and YouTube simultaneously while receiving airplay on both Regional Mexican and general Latin radio formats in the United States — two separate airplay panels that Billboard tracks independently through its Regional Mexican Airplay and Latin Airplay charts. When a track draws from multiple format panels at once, it accumulates chart points faster than a single-format hit. Corridos tumbados, sitting audibly between regional Mexican tradition and the trap production already familiar to urbano listeners, was structurally positioned to do exactly that.

AMPROFON responded with multi-platinum certifications across the Génesis tracklist for Mexican consumption, reflecting streaming volumes that the body's own certification database records against its national thresholds — figures set independently of both RIAA Latin certifications and Promusicae's Spanish-market numbers. A single release can carry all three simultaneously, and several Peso Pluma tracks did.

Chart mechanics

  • Hot 100 — Billboard's main U.S. singles chart, combining streaming, airplay and download data
  • Billboard 200 — album chart using streaming equivalent album (SEA) methodology
  • Hot Latin Songs — a separate Billboard chart tracking Latin-format radio airplay, streaming and sales; a track can appear on both Hot Latin Songs and Hot 100 simultaneously, doubling its chart-point contribution
  • AMPROFON — Mexico's certification body; thresholds are set independently of RIAA or Promusicae numbers
  • Multi-format airplay — when a track charts on more than one Billboard airplay panel (e.g., Regional Mexican Airplay and Latin Airplay), it accumulates points from each

Fuerza Regida and the Ensemble Effect

No single artist produced the corridos tumbados breakthrough alone. Fuerza Regida, a group from San Bernardino, California, with deep roots in Sinaloa's musical culture, had built a U.S. fanbase through live touring and streaming before Génesis arrived. Their collaboration with Peso Pluma on "Beso Mío" extended his reach into a listener base that already consumed banda and norteño alongside newer trap-inflected formats. Grupo Frontera, meanwhile, brought cumbia adjacency into the same commercial moment, widening the definition of what regional Mexican music could chart as.

The live circuit reinforced what the streams were already showing. Peso Pluma sold out arenas across the United States and Mexico through 2023, with venues in cities including Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston moving tickets at speeds more typical of pop and urbano acts than regional Mexican artists. Touring data reported by Pollstar placed his 2023 run among the top-grossing Latin tours of the year, a commercial signal that label partners including Interscope could use to justify mainstream radio promotion — a support mechanism that in turn fed airplay panel scores and pushed chart positions higher still.

The feedback loop is, in that sense, the story. Corridos tumbados reached the global charts not because the genre suddenly changed but because streaming metrics, multi-format airplay, AMPROFON certification volume, and arena-scale touring all aligned at the same moment around the same artists — and the Billboard methodology, which counts all of those data streams simultaneously, recorded the result in real time.
